Cayenne and Goat Cheese in Ice Cream? Oh My!

Who else needs some ice cream right about now? Well, sadly, today's featured ice cream shop doesn't open until 12:30 every day. Apparently they're unaware of the market for ice cream at breakfast in Austin. Let's hope they correct that soon.

Lick (Honest Ice Creams) has been open in Austin for about two years. They're located on South Lamar at Oltorf. (West side of the street, kind-of tucked back in there. Careful driving! It's a little - kind-of a lot - crowded on South Lamar!)

There's more than one cool thing about this ice cream shop, but let me go ahead and get this pun out of the way: the coolest part is the ice cream!

Thanks, Michael.

So they were nice enough to let me try, like, almost all of the flavors. Apparently their most popular is the Caramel Salt Lick, which is really good and probably one of the more normal flavors on their menu.

I however had a hard time choosing between the Dark Chocolate with Olive Oil & Sea Salt, Cilantro Lime (I swear, it tastes good!) and the Coconut, Peanut Butter & Chocolate Swirl. I picked the last one to take home with me. It happens to be vegan (coconut milk-based), but that's not why I picked it. It just tastes good, and I wanted some more!

And yes, I did try both the Roasted Beet & Fresh Mint and the Goat Cheese, Thyme & Honey flavors that you see on the bottom right. And yes, they both taste like ice cream and not beets and cheese. Also, yes, I am counting the little sample spoon size of the beets flavor as a vegetable serving for today.

Last flavor note: try the Too Hot Chocolate. I didn't believe them when they told me it was actually spicy, and at first I was just smiling and nodding, like, 'tooootally. I can really taste it.' And then I swallowed and the cayenne pepper kinda punched me in the throat. Apparently this is not an unusual experience, because they were ready with a Fresh Mint & Chocolate Chunk cool down for me. I know you don't believe me that ice cream can be that kind of spicy. You'll just have to go see for yourself.

The other cool thing about this ice cream shop is that they're not just locally owned, they also use as many local ingredients as they can get their hands on . There's a whole list on their website of the different farms and food artisans that they use around town and Central Texas. Apparently my serving of beets came from a farm in East Austin. So not only did I do my body good, I also helped out our local economy. As if eating ice cream didn't make us feel good already!

I know what you're thinking. It's the same thing I thought when a friend (our blog designer actually!) told me about this place this weekend! 'I don't want cilantro in my ice cream. In my salsa, yes. Ice cream, no.' But trust me! Go for the Caramel Salt Lick, but while you're there, try one of the flavors that sounds like it can't possibly make good ice cream! Just be prepared for a cayenne throat punch from a little tiny spoon of Too Hot Chocolate!
