Lone Star Jam 2013 - Guest Post

Guest post by Diana Cox @ dianacoxphotos.wordpress.com/

Well then... here we are at almost midnight.  Tuesday 5/7/13.  Two days after Lone Star Jam ended.  I am about 3/4 of the way through editing all the photos I took.  I know, I know - I should be DONE by now, but SHEESH people - give me a break... I took 7,324 photos, for goodness sake (not including the ones I deleted on-camera)!  Yes, yes - it's my own doing.  I KNOW I shouldn't take that many photos, but trust me - I didn't take as many as I was inclined to take!  What's a girl supposed to do with TWENTY bands in 2 days?  So many people, so many photo ops - on stage and off.  Sigh...

There's just no way I can take you through the whole weekend on one blog post, so guess what?  Time for another top 10 list!  I could seriously do a top 100 list, but you'd be here all day and, frankly, who has that kind of time?  So, here they are, in no particular order (except #1), my Top Ten Moments from Lone Star Jam 2013:

NUMERO UNO:  CHARLIE!  Anyone who knows me knows that THIS is who I came to see!  :)  Charlie Robison is my hands-down favorite.  He NEVER fails to put on a great show.  He got the crowd totally wild Saturday afternoon - ready for Roger Creager, Reckless Kelly & Josh Abbott to keep it going... (he and his band had to leave right after their set to go to Gruene Hall for ANOTHER show that night!)  He even did a little dancing to John O'Reilly, which is no small feat when you're that tall and holding a guitar!

TWO:  Aaaaaaaaaron!   What a smile!  (he's a pretty dang good singer, too, but GOSH that smile!)  I don't really need to elaborate more that that, do I?  OK fine - Aaron Watson put on a great show Saturday - all the girls loved him, as usual and everyone went crazy when he sang "Love Makin' Song"  blah blah blah...but really we all just melted when he smiled...

THREE:  Another of my favorites from Saturday is Whiskey Myers... these guys are FANTASTIC.  Love their Southern Rockness... is "rockness" a word?  No?  VERY cool, either way.  Plus 3 guitar players is NEVER a bad thing in my mind!  They said they just finished recording a new album - cannot WAIT for that!  It was cool to see that everyone was singing along to "Anna Marie" and "Ballad of a Southern Man" and "Broken Window Serenade."

FOUR:  One of the 2 bands I'd never seen before was Granger Smith.  What FUN they were!  And they just had such a great time on stage!  Of course all the screaming girls on the lawn couldn't have hurt... but still - they were GOOD!  (Can't forget Earl Dibbles, Jr. either - what a character HE is!)

FIVE:  RECKLESS!  So if this list were in some sort of order, these guys would be up at the top with Charlie!  Reckless Kelly was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!!!!  My favorite song was "52 Vincent Black Lightening" followed closely by "Seven Nights in Ireland."  For "Seven Nights..." the Braun brothers' dad, Muzzie, came on stage and sang with them, plus a very talented "River Dancer" got up on stage and danced during the song... AND Matt Medearis (drummer & washboard player for Roger Creager) played the washboard, too.  Question - does one PLAY a washboard?  If not - what would it be called?  Strummed?  Scratched?  Hmmmm.

SIX:  RANDY ROGERS RANDY ROGERS RANDY ROGERS!  (I feel that's all I need to say about Randy, but on a side note - I had to leave before the show was over because I had an hour drive home and I was so tired I had forgotten my name and was afraid I'd forget how to GET home... so I didn't get to hear FUZZY... boo hisssssssss!)

SEVEN:  KEVIN FOWLER!  Yeah... I know I said that Charlie is my favorite, but really and truly - there is no one who puts on a more FUN show than Kevin.  I just cannot imagine anyone going to see him and his band and not having a great time - it's just not possible!  The crowd was totally loving it... so much that apparently some girls felt compelled to throw their bras on stage.  Now I know this is not the first time such a thing has ever happened, but it was still kinda funny and kinda shocking.  And once
ONE hit the stage - it seemed to catch on and spread and more kept coming.  I was telling the girl next to me that it seemed to be contagious.  I have lived a long time and have never returned home without the bra I had left home wearing and was sure hoping I didn't catch whatever was going around because I didn't want to explain to my husband why I would feel compelled to do such a thing.  I was spared from the outbreak, tho - WHEW!  :)  KEVIN, however... Kevin picked up the first one and held it up and said, "My, my, my - we are ALL going to HELLLLLLL tonight!"  And then put it over the end of his guitar.  Of course the crowd went INSANE...

EIGHT:  JACK!  Is he not just the COOLEST thing ever?  Of course he is - no question about it.  William Clark Green came on stage and sang "Barbie Doll" with him - that was a lot of fun.  And we all took our shoes off when he sang "Barefoot and Crazy."

NINE:  The Cadillac Three - I've SEEN these guys before, but it was a smallish acoustic show and I really didn't get the full FEEL of it.  WOW WOW WOW are they incredible!!! ...they're a Skynyrdish-but-not-Skynyrd Southern Rock band.  And so INTERESTING to photograph (PLUS the steel player was wearing a Conway Twitty t-shirt - AWESOME!  ha!)!  I love their new song "Southern."  Actually, to tell you the truth, I haven't heard anything by them I didn't like.  I was wondering about the "ignore alien orders" sticker on his guitar, though - who has he been talking to???

TEN:  The PEOPLE!  You know...I didn't see ONE fight this weekend.  I'm relatively sure there WERE fights... had to have been (esp. at the Fowler show - there are always GIRL fights at Fowler shows - lol).  But I didn't see ANY where I was and that is unusual.  Everyone seemed to be having a great time and were just happy to be out in the sun enjoying themselves!  ...I wonder if all the newly bra-less girls had any issues when they got home that night?  Think Mom or Dad noticed????  :)

Thank you, Jenni, for letting me take over your blog for a day! ♥
