Feel Good Food on South Lamar

I'm a grown-up. I can do what I wanna do. And since I also happen to be a mother-to-be at the moment, what I wanna do is eat donuts...for every meal if possible.

It's easy enough to find donuts for breakfast, and if I plan ahead I can still have some reasonably fresh ones left for lunch. But now I have a grown-up(ish) way to round out the day (and my waist) with donuts for dinner!

You would think it would be difficult to build an ENTIRE menu around donuts, but somebody was really dedicated to their mission...and they accomplished it!

Gordough's started out as only a food truck (I believe it's at South First and Elizabeth). They served dessert donuts. Not just the creme-filled kind you're used to. (Think toppings like cream cheese icing, chocolate covered brownie bites and grilled strawberries.)

But (thank you, Jesus!) they took it a step further and opened Gordough's Public House on the site of the old S. Lamar Kerbey Lane. (Kerbey moved up the street a bit.)

They do serve the dessert donuts here. (More on that in a bit) But they also have a full, donut inspired menu. You can get salads with a toasted garlic donut, chicken fried steak atop a hot donut (no glaze involved here) or a burger served on an unglazed donut:

(That's the Ron Burgundy burger. It has a fried egg on it)

Or if you're trying to be dainty, you can have what is basically a caprese salad plus bacon on a donut:

Now, I love balsamic vinegar and fresh mozzarella, (I don't have to mention that I love bacon, right? That's a given.) so I definitely enjoyed my open-faced sandwich here. But what I would definitely order again is the fried okra on the side there! It's battered in a flour batter instead of cornmeal like normal, and it was perfect. I left a little bit of the sandwich. Cannot say the same for the okra.

Although, I was sort-of wishing I'd left a little bit more room for the Funky Monkey dessert donut we ordered!

I don't even remember what all was going on with that donut, but when I saw the photo again today, I thought, 'I need another one of those!' There's definitely some cream cheese icing and grilled bananas...I don't know, but it was good!

Case in point, my polite husband normally leaves the last bit of whatever we're sharing for his pregnant wife. This time, we were basically racing to see who got the last bite of this one. I'm gonna go ahead and out him...he won. So since I've still got the child, basically he took food out of his child's mouth. For shame, Michael!

Maybe I can leverage that into going back. It's about 8:30 as I'm writing this...they're still open for a while...

  2. I don't remember dessert going that way. I remember pushing the last bite over to you if for no other reason than being stuffed from the Ron Burgundy.
